Applying perfume is the simplest of matters — simply spray, dab, or in the case of a solid perfume compact, swipe. (Do avoid rubbing the wrists together after application, to prevent “crushing” the scent).

Fragrance Do’s and Don’ts

• DO spray fragrance from at least 10 to 12 inches away to diffuse the scent.
• DO apply fragrance right after showering to make it last longer.
• DON’T smell a fragrance from the bottle. Apply fragrance to the skin to allow your individual reaction to the scent to develop.
• DON’T judge a fragrance by the way it smells at first because only the alcohol and most volatile top notes are present. Smell the fragrance 15 minutes after application when the heart of the fragrance is developing. This will give you a true idea of its character, how well it develops, and how likely it will suit you.
• DON’T rub your wrists together after applying fragrance. This friction will “bruise” the oils and chemically alter the scent.
• DON’T be influenced by the way a fragrance smells on somebody else. It won’t smell the same on you.
