When is Mother’s Day?

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13th 2018. In the United States, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May.

What is the history of Mother’s Day?

The first Mother’s Day was organized in 1908 by Anna Jarvis of West Virginia. Jarvis originally conceived of the holiday to honor her mother, Ann Reese Jarvis, as well as all the mothers around the country who do so much for their children.

Prior to the Civil War, Ann Reese Jarvis started “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” designed to teach local women how to better take care of their children. The organization was a success and remained a beloved touchstone throughout the tumultuous years of war. In 1868, after the end of the war, Ann Reese Jarvis organized a “Mothers’ Friendship Day,” where mothers met with former Union and Confederate soldiers to encourage reconciliation.

Jarvis’ first Mother’s Day celebration was held in 1908 in a Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, with funding from John Wanamaker, a Philadelphia department store owner. That same day, Wanamaker held a Mother’s Day event at his store in Philadelphia that drew thousands of visitors.

After the celebration was such a success, Jarvis organized a letter writing campaign to newspapers and politicians to make the holiday an official one. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a decree designating Mother’s Day as the second Sunday in May.
