Avon is one of the oldest fragrance houses in the world, beginning as the California Perfume Company in 1886. The direct sales model still used by the Avon company today began with its earliest representative, Mrs. P.F.E. Albee. This New Hampshire lady, born in 1836, was known for her style and savvy, which attracted the attention of Avon founder David H. McConnell. He asked her to be the company’s first traveling salesperson, and the rest is history.

The term ‘Avon Lady’ was coined by the company and has come to represent the unique aspects of the role. The company allows its employees to purchase products and literature, and resell the items on their own time in their own style—exactly what McConnell was doing as a book salesman. Just one year into his perfume business, McConnell, thanks to Albee, recruited a team of 12 female representatives to market his 18-piece fragrance line. In 1905 the company launched Outlook magazine, a publication for sharing advice to employees and keeping representatives up-to-date on company news. The following year, Avon had enough products to release a sales catalogue, a move that helped sales grow tremendously.

In 1939, David McConnell Jr. changed the company’s name to Avon Products, Inc., in honor of his father’s love for playwright and poet William Shakespeare (1564-1616), who was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England.

In 2011, the company celebrated 125 years of business and has over six million sales representatives operating in more than 100 countries today. The company remains relevant in today’s market through its use of technology for its products and for marketing, and has reached a new generation of customers through its use of celebrity spokesmodels such as Reese Witherspoon’s In Bloom, Courtney Cox and Patrick Dempsey’s Unscripted.
