Empowering Women for Over a Century Through Direct Selling

Flexibility, work-life balance, opportunity for all…these are some of the guiding principles driving the direct selling industry, principles not only appealing to women but also extremely forward-thinking. In the past, a woman’s duty to family often meant she was tied to the home and couldn’t enjoy a career or earn money of her own. For years, direct selling has afforded women with the ability to do both, long before the virtual, work-from-home days of COVID.

Avon, in fact, has been empowering women for more than 135 years and continues to do so today. Avon pioneered direct-to-consumer selling with women in charge, giving back to organizations that benefit women and transforming the cosmetic industry with its innovative products.

A BUSINESS INSPIRED BY WOMEN

In 1886, the year the Statue of Liberty was dedicated, David H. McConnell was a traveling book salesman. He was giving away free perfume with each book sold, when he realized that his customers—mostly housewives—were more interested in the fragrance. This prompted him to start a fragrance company called the California Perfume Company that would eventually become Avon. McConnell noticed that women not only loved the products but also loved to network with other women, so he employed them to help to grow his business.

The first woman McConnell hired was Mrs. P.F.E. Albee, a 50-year-old wife and mother of two from New Hampshire. Considered the first Avon Lady, or Representative as they are called today, Mrs. Albee traveled by horse and buggy and developed a women-only network to sell directly to other women—now known as direct selling. She also helped create one of the company’s first fragrance collections, the Little Dot Perfume Set. In her twelve years working with the California Perfume Company, Mrs. Albee trained more than 5,000 representatives to sell cosmetics. At this time, only 20 percent of women worked outside the home. It would be another thirty-four years before women received the right to vote. As a firm believer in helping women support themselves, McConnell was truly ahead of his time.

The Avon name first began appearing on products in 1929, in honor of Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of McConnell’s favorite playwright William Shakespeare. The company was officially renamed Avon in 1939—two years after McConnell’s passing. To this day, Avon upholds the principles McConnell instilled while running the company.

As McConnell once said, “Let no difficulty stand in your way. Bring to bear the spirit of intensity. Put your heart and soul into the fight, and fight to win.”

Representatives continue to be at the heart of Avon’s direct selling today. AVON HONORS WOMEN WHO DO GOOD

Avon believes that women can accomplish anything they put their minds to and can look and feel beautiful while achieving their goals. Here are some notable moments over the years giving rise to incredible women.

1940s – Avon’s committee of prominent women awarded the Avon Medallion of Honor to World War II nurses and service women who showed great spirit and fortitude in caring for the wounded and for prisoners of war.

1950s – The Avon sales force almost quadrupled in size. In 1954, Avon supported its Representatives and their businesses by airing its first TV advertisement that included the famous slogan, “Ding Dong, Avon Calling.”

1967 – Avon Running: Avon sponsored Katherine Switzer, the first woman to unofficially run the Boston Marathon.

1975 – Avon launched a makeup line called “Avon Shades of Beauty” for Black women that included makeup, skin care, and hair care.

1977 – The Avon Tennis Circuit launched for women.

1978 – The Avon International Marathon was an annual women’s marathon event sponsored by the company. The Avon Women’s Marathons broke barriers by giving talented women runners confidence, opportunity, and exposure . . . a chance to prove they could do it.

1999 – In 1999, Avon appointed Andrea Jung to be its first woman CEO.

1999 – Avon’s brand slogan became “The Company for Women.”

2008 – On International Women’s Day, Avon partnered with United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) to promote women’s empowerment and end violence against women.

AVON CREATES PRODUCTS WOMEN CAN FEEL GOOD ABOUT

Avon has launched innovative products like hydrating and highly pigmented lip color, pioneering anti-aging skin care and iconic brands such as Skin So Soft, a best-selling favorite since 1961. Today, contributing to a variety of organizations is still at the core of Avon. The fight against breast cancer has become a huge pillar of Avon’s mission. Since 1992, Avon has contributed more than $800 million to breast cancer causes, educated 180 million women about this disease, and funded breast health screenings for nearly 20 million women.

Since 2004, Avon has also partnered with Feed the Children, an organization that works to improve nutrition, hygiene, and education in vulnerable communities around the world. Over the last seventeen years, Avon has donated over 17 million pounds of personal care, hygiene and beauty products, clothing, shoes, and home essentials to families in need. In that time, we’ve empowered and impacted nearly 1 million families and 4.4 million women and girls in the United States. The Feed the Children x Avon Box is delivered to women and their families year round and in response to disasters. As a result of the delivery of this box, we hear stories of improved self-confidence and empowerment. This box really became critical to women and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Avon is also proud to partner with Gyrl Wonder, a professional pipeline initiative giving rise to ambitious young women of color between the ages of seventeen and twenty-two. Similar to Avon’s promoting and inspiring female entrepreneurship through the opportunity to build businesses for hundreds of thousands of Representatives, Gyrl Wonder equips the young woman who has found her passion with the toolkit necessary to turn her interests into a career.

5 Essential Business Lessons from Avon’s Very First Representative

Before women had the right to vote or had a true means of financial independence, there was one woman from within Avon’s history that defied conventions – the first-ever Representative, Mrs. Persis Foster Eames Albee. This New Hampshire lady, born in 1836, was known for her style and savvy, which attracted the attention of Avon founder David H. McConnell. He asked her to be the company’s first traveling salesperson, and the rest is history.

Whether you’re working to rise through the corporate ranks or are an entrepreneur about to launch the next great idea, we can all learn a thing (or five) from this one-woman powerhouse.

1. Take a Leap of Faith. In 1886, Mrs. P.F.E. Albee took a risk and accepted an offer from David McConnell who was transitioning out of the book business to work as a door-to-door salesperson. He then started the California Perfume Company (CPC). You can call it the original startup. “Mrs. Albee was one of the most successful General Agents I had in the book work, and it was in her hands I placed the first sample case, or outfit, in the perfume business,” McConnell wrote in 1903. Known for her genteel nature and voracious ambition, Albee traveled by horse-drawn wagon, train, or by foot, offering perfumes to those she encountered  talk about some serious hustle.

2. Have a Game Plan. All her hard work and determination paid off. Mrs. Albee was soon hired to take over the daily operations of perfume sales. Of course, she went full throttle with her mission. Capitalizing on the growing popularity of perfume, she expanded her travels beyond her tiny New Hampshire town to the entire Northeast. Albee developed a business plan in which she recruited women to serve as “depot agents,” selling products in their own neighborhoods. “It is, therefore, only befitting that we give her the honorary title of Mother of the California Perfume Company,” McConnell wrote. The strategy was so successful it became one of the key identifiers of the company that’s still used today.

3. Love What You Do. Imagine Mrs. Albee confident and in control  she wraps up one successful sale and then off she goes up the street to greet the next customer to close the next sale. Albee leaned into her new gig and the hard work paid off in all sectors of her life. In a letter to McConnell, she wrote, “I know of no line of work so lucrative, pleasant and satisfactory as this.”

4. Always Dress for Success. Much like she lived her life, Albee dressed with no fear, making a fashion style statement-after-statement. She dressed in ensembles such as lavender taffeta gowns with tiered layers, exaggerated sleeves, and look-at-me trains. Talk about power dressing! A seasoned and stylish traveler, she saw no reason to dress down while on the road. In 2015 speak, her outfits went viral when the famously elegant attire later inspired a Mrs. P.F.E. Albee special edition Barbie.

5. Spread the Love. Albee’s enthusiasm was entirely contagious. As Avon’s first traveling saleswoman, she recruited other determined ladies to work for the company. In fact, Albee succeeded in empowering women by incorporating them into the mainstream business world 34 years before women even had the right to vote! One of the company’s first employees, Ann Meany, gave Albee a solid endorsement, writing in her memoirs: “She was about 60 in 1985 and was still making trips, working almost entirely under Mr. McConnell’s direction. She was the daughter of a minister and so sweet and lovely she deserves a whole volume just to herself. Today, Avon Representatives have really placed her on a pedestal – literally. Since 1969, the company has awarded highly coveted 10-inch tall porcelain figurines of Albee to the company’s top sales representatives. And yes, it’s still a very big deal to receive one.

The bottom line is that Albee’s story teaches us that no matter how big or small your dreams may be, go after them. In this age of self-starters, who knows where a little Albee-inspired ambition could take you. The first Representative and affectionately dubbed her the “Mother of the California Perfume Company.” Mrs. P.F.E. Albee of New Hampshire was 50 when she began selling perfumes for McConnell. She traveled by horse and buggy and by train, offering perfumes such as the inaugural single-note scents – Violet, White Rose, Heliotrope, Lily-of-the-Valley, and Hyacinth – door-to-door throughout the Northeast section of the United States. In a letter to McConnell, Mrs. Albee wrote, “I know of no line of work so lucrative, pleasant and satisfactory as this.” The legendary Mrs. Albee is still considered a role model for Avon Representatives today and is credited with creating the company’s system for distributing products.

I remember a classmates mother selling Avon to my mother. I began collecting the older, unique perfume bottles in the shape of an owl, a flower, the Eiffel Tower.

I have been buying Avon products for over 27 years but had Avon ladies come and go from my life. I’ve been a successful small business owner for 24+ years but was looking for a new opportunity to earn extra money. I chose Avon because it’s a company with a well-known brand name. In 2010 I became an Avon Representative, started in Leadership for recruiting, and became an educated Beauty Advisor. With my customers help, I joined the elite group of top-achieving Representatives for the third year. The President’s Recognition Program honors individuals who have reached published sales performance levels.

For more than 130 years, the Avon brand has stood for beauty, innovation, optimism and, above all, for women. In North America (U.S., Canada & Puerto Rico), Avon operates as a privately-held company. When consumers have questions about direct selling, we say to them: At its best, direct selling is “I tried the product. I liked the product. I recommend it to a friend.” If you are considering entering direct sales (or ‘social selling’) here are three tips to remember:

Like the product! Make sure it’s a product you use and enjoy yourself. You will be selling to your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers.

Understand the product. All good direct selling/social selling companies will provide training and mentoring support. But you should not need to invest heavily in start-up training and marketing materials.

Know who you are buying from and who is paying you. When ordering product for your customers, make sure you will be purchasing from the Company, not the individual who recruited you into selling. And that your earnings will be paid by the Company.
